How to convert an audio file

Understanding audio formats
MP3, AAC and M4A are “lossy” formats: they make files much smaller by removing sounds that are hard to hear. MP3 is the most compatible; AAC (inside M4A files) usually sounds a little better at the same size and is the standard on Apple devices.
WAV and FLAC are “lossless”: they keep every detail of the audio. WAV is uncompressed and very large; FLAC compresses the same audio to roughly half the size without losing anything.

Converting a lossy file (like MP3) to WAV or FLAC does not restore lost quality. It only makes the file bigger. Convert to lossless when an app requires it, not to improve sound.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve quality?
No. The WAV will sound exactly like the MP3. Lossless formats only preserve quality that is already there.
What is the difference between M4A and AAC?
Both contain AAC audio. M4A wraps it in an MP4 container that supports tags and is widely recognized; .aac is the raw audio stream.
Are tags like title and artist kept?
Basic tags are usually preserved. Embedded cover art is not included in the converted file.
Is my audio uploaded?
No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser.
