Why convert MP4 to MP3?

An MP4 file contains video and audio. When you only need the sound, such as a recorded lecture, an interview, a podcast filmed on camera, or music you recorded yourself, an MP3 is far more practical.

MP3 files are much smaller than videos and play on almost everything: phones, computers, car stereos, smart speakers and older music players. They are also easier to send, store and listen to in the background.

Which MP3 quality should you choose?

128 kbps	Smallest file (about 1 MB per minute). Fine for speech, lectures and podcasts.
192 kbps	Good balance of quality and size (about 1.4 MB per minute). Recommended for most uses.
256 kbps	High quality (about 1.9 MB per minute), hard to tell apart from the original.
320 kbps	The highest MP3 quality (about 2.4 MB per minute). Useful when the original audio is very good.

A higher bitrate can't add quality that isn't in the video. If the MP4's audio was recorded at a low quality, choosing 320 kbps gives you a bigger file, not better sound.

Some MP4 files, such as screen recordings or muted clips, contain no sound track. In that case there is nothing to convert to MP3.

How long does the conversion take?

Usually a few seconds to a minute on a computer, depending on the length of the video. Phones take longer. The first time, your browser also downloads the converter (about 30 MB), which is then cached.

Can I convert MP4 to MP3 on my phone?

Yes, on iPhone and Android in Safari or Chrome. Very large videos may exceed a phone’s memory; if that happens, try a shorter video or use a computer.
