How to compress a video
- Choose your video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV).
- Select Best Quality, Balanced or Smallest File.
- Click “Compress video” and wait while it is processed.
- Download the smaller MP4.
Quality vs. file size
Video size depends mostly on resolution and bitrate (the amount of data used per second). Phones record at very high bitrates, so their videos often become much smaller after compression with little visible difference.
Stronger compression lowers the resolution and uses less data per second. The file gets smaller, but fine details, text and fast motion can look softer. Start with Balanced and only use Smallest File when size matters most.

Compression runs on your device, which is private but can be slow: roughly as long as the video on a computer, longer on a phone. Trim the video first to save time.
Supported files
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV files up to 500 MB. The result is an MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio).
Privacy

Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my video be?
It depends on the original. High-bitrate phone videos usually shrink a lot. Videos that are already compressed (for example downloaded from a streaming service or a messaging app) shrink less.
What if the result is bigger than the original?
This can happen with videos that are already heavily compressed. We show a note when it happens, and we recommend keeping your original.
Is the sound kept?
Yes, the audio is kept and compressed to AAC.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser, on your device.
